Does Xanax Cause Weight Gain?

Does Xanax Cause Weight Gain?

Xanax is a drug that is used to treat anxiety and also treats panic disorders. The drug should be taken on prescription only and therefore in some countries it is not sold over the counter without a valid doctor’s note to be allowed to take it.

The drug is classified under a group of drugs known as benzodiazepines that are known to have effects by stimulating the brain and the central nervous system so as to cause some calming effects on the patient who takes it.

Anxiety and panic disorders are related to behavior of a person, and hence the only way to control them is by influencing the thinking of the person.

When one takes the drugs, they get into the bloodstream, and once they get to the brain, they produce some calming effect that then leads the brain to cool the conditions that have been affecting the patient.

Therefore the drug is effective in fighting the anxiety and panic through calming the person. Some people argue that Xanax causes weight gain to the patients. So does Xanax really cause weight gain?

Relation between Xanax and Weight Gain

There is no clear explanation that links Xanax to weight gain. However, this can be related to the effect of the condition that is being treated. For some people, anxiety will cause them not to eat food.

This is because they are not settled, and therefore they don’t feel like eating food. These are people who will lose weight a lot because they don’t eat when they are anxious. Therefore, these people must get medication so that they don’t die of hunger.

Treatment Leads to Patient Eating More

Once a patient is introduced to Xanax treatment, the body will absorb the drug, and once it gets to the brain, the calming effect is released to the body. This is when the patient will begin feeling there is need to feed.

Therefore with the anxiety and panic disorders gone, the person’s nervous system will begin functioning properly. The more energy that was sent to the senses leading to anxiety will be equally distributed to the body so as to handle other matters.

Number one; remember this person has not been feeding well. Therefore, the person will begin feeling hungry once the body is calmed from the anxiety.

As the hunger comes, he is now able to feed more since the body senses will also be determined to eat. The appetite will be okay leading to eating more food.

Continued eating will lead to the recovery of the body which means that the patient will start gaining weight again. The opposite will be happening this time around. Therefore once the patient has started eating well, then there will be weight gain.

From the above explanation, it is clear it is not the drug that causes the person to gain weight. What is causing the person to gain weight is improved dietary behavior.

Therefore it should be clear that Xanax will help the patient to eat more and therefore the issue of gaining weight due to Xanax does not hold water.
